Overview

Fan models serviced by TAL have a limited motor warranty that covers the motor from factory defects. Information regarding your fan’s specific warranty can be found in the owner’s manual. Defective motors must be serviced by TAL’s warranty department. TAL will NOT ship replacement motors without servicing the original motor.

parts covered by the warranty

Only the bare motor is covered under the motor warranty. All other parts (such as blades, light kits, and remotes) are covered by a separate warranty for at least 1 year after the date of purchase. See the warranty in your fan’s owner’s manual for the specific amount of years that your motor and other parts are covered. Capacitors, receivers, LED drivers, and other modules are NOT part of the motor warranty.

Defects covered by the warranty

The warranty only covers defects in workmanship or material from the factory and initial shipment. Examples of motor defects include loud noise, severe wobble that wont go away after a break in period or use of a balancing kit, or fan functions not working correctly such as fan speeds and lights.

Voiding the warranty

The warranty will be void on any parts that have been damaged or modified after purchase or delivery. Examples of warranty voiding events include (but are not limited to) installing third party parts like lights, blades, or controllers, disassembling or modifying the motor by altering the wiring or replacing the modules with incompatible parts obtained outside of TAL or Home Depot customer service, or by installing the fan on an unsafe outlet box or electrical supply. Voided parts will not be serviced under any circumstance.

Obtaining Motor warranty service

Motor warranty service is handled directly through TAL customer service. Motors shipped to TAL without proper forms and approval will NOT be serviced. If approved for motor servicing, customer service will provide instructions, a Motor Service Agreement Form, a case number, and a shipping address. To obtain warranty service or to learn more, contact TAL customer service.

 Packing Tips

1. (Box): Should be sturdy and new, preferably with stitched or stapled seams. It must be big enough to give at least 2-5 inches of space between the item(s) and the side of the box. Use Fragile Stickers and draw “This Side Up” arrows.

2. (Packing Materials): The original foam that the entire fan came in would provide the best protection for the motor (be sure to remove all other items from the box). Alternatively, you can use dense cushioning material like molded Styrofoam or sturdy foam sheets. Avoid using just bubble wrap, packing paper, or packing peanuts as they are too weak to protect heavy items like the motor.

3. (Motors without Housings): Put sturdy packing material around the sides of the lower and upper shafts. The goal is to distribute weight and pressure around those areas because they bend easily.

4. (Motors with Housings): Put more protection on the lower shaft to keep the rest of the motor’s weight from bending it. If it is pushed to the side it will bend the housing with it.

5. (Motors with Large Plates): If the top plate is held down with only 6 screws at the top/center coupling, it can be removed and the motor can be serviced without it. If the plate is held down by a large nut or requires special tools to remove, leave it installed. You can protect large plates by putting sturdy packing material beneath and above the plate.

6. (Other Parts): Wrap any other individual parts in bubble wrap or packing paper. Make sure all parts are disassembled before shipping.

7. (Test): Once you feel that the package is secure, shake the box. If nothing moves, it is ready to ship. If the motor or other parts shake inside the package, you need to use more packing material.

Do not use plastic bags, newspapers, magazines, or trash as packing material.

Do not ship the package if parts are loose inside the box.

Do not ship the package with the blade arms, light kit, or other parts assembled on the motor.

FAQ

How do I send my fan in for service?

Motor servicing must first be approved by customer service. Once approved you will receive a form and instructions for mailing in your motor.

Where is my TAL Case Number and Service Rep Email?

Both are noted in the email sent to you with the Motor Service Form attached. If you cannot locate this information, contact customer service immediately.

How much will this service cost?

The cost of repair and shipping back to you is completely free. However, you will need to pay for shipping to the motor servicing facility. If there are defective components that are not covered by the motor warranty (like receivers, remotes, or capacitors), you will need to pay for the replacement parts as well.

How long will the repairs take?

Up to 15 business days, but sometimes much sooner. If replacement motors are out of stock for motor that cannot be repaired the wait can be much longer.

How do I check the status and timeline for my motor repair?

Use the “Check Motor Service Status” tool to find the status of your motor repair and for an ETA for completion. You will need the correct TAL case number that was provided by email. It will take 1-2 business days after the fan is received by the motor warranty department for your motor status to appear in the search tool.

What happens if my fan is damaged during shipping?

You are responsible for your motor’s condition until it arrives at the repair facility. If the motor is received damaged the warranty will be voided and it will not be serviced. You must ship your fan via UPS and insure for $100 to avoid any issues. PACK WELL AND INSURE YOUR PACKAGE!

Can I disassemble the motor to save on shipping costs?

You can remove simple plates and housings from the motor if they are only held down with screws and do not have modules required for fan operation (like switches or pull chains). Do not remove plates or housings held down with bolts/nuts. Do not cut any wires or remove any modules from the motor.

What happens if my motor cannot be repaired?

Motors under warranty that cannot be repaired will be replaced with a new motor. If a model has been discontinued then you will receive a limited list of fans of equal or superior value. We will not issue checks or money orders under any circumstance.
