• Why is the Hampton Bay Halwin ceiling fan being recalled?

There have been a few reports of fan blades separating from the fan housing assembly.  There have not been any reported injuries.  The CPSC requested, and Youngo agreed to, a voluntary recall.   

• What are the specific details of the recalled units?

This recall specifically impacts the Hampton Bay 52-inch Halwin models sold exclusively at The Home Depot stores and website.  The model numbers for the Halwin fans subject to the recall are AK396H-MBK and AK396H-BN.  The UPCs for those models are 840059614922 or 840059615370.  These numbers are located on the product packaging, the rating label on the inside of the fan mounting plate, and the warranty registration card.

• Where can I locate the model information on my fan?

The model numbers and UPCs are located on the product packaging, the rating label located on the inside of fan mounting plate, and the warranty registration card packed with the Use and Care Guide.  The serial number and date code are printed on labeling attached to the mounting plate that attaches to the ceiling.  

• What are my options for a full refund?

You can receive a refund via online or at a Home Depot location.

ONLINE FORM RETURN

To receive a refund online, use the form below. You will be required to submit the following items:  (1) your proof of purchase, which would be a copy of your receipt from Home Depot for your purchase of the recalled fan; (2) a photograph of the product labeling located on the underside of the mounting plate of the fan showing the model number and serial number of the fan.

If confirmed to be eligible you will then be instructed to provide a photo showing proof of your disposal of the product, which could be a photo of the fan in a garbage bin.  

The refund you receive through the online process will be in the form of a Home Depot gift card or an ACH deposit transfer to your bank account.  To receive a refund via ACH transfer, you will need to provide your bank account information.  Online refunds will not include credit back to a credit card used to purchase the fan.

HOME DEPOT STORE RETURN

To receive a refund at a Home Depot store, please return the fan to the customer service desk at the store.  Please provide the customer service personnel your proof of purchase.  Home Depot personnel also will need to record or take a photograph of the model number and serial number of your fan.  In-store refunds will be in the form of a Home Depot gift card or credit back to the credit card you used to purchase the fan.

• I don’t have my receipt.  Can I still obtain a refund?

Yes, you can return your fan to a Home Depot store.  If you provide Home Depot with the credit card number used to purchase the fan, Home Depot can try to identify the purchase transaction.  If Home Depot is able to identify the purchase transaction, it can credit your card the purchase price of the fan.  If Home Depot is unable to identify the purchase transaction, it still can provide a refund in the form of a Home Depot gift card.

• How much is the refund?

The amount of the refund will be the purchase price shown on your receipt, plus applicable taxes you paid for the fan.  

If you don’t have a receipt, the refund will be $179.

• Can I complete my return directly at a local store?

Yes, you can bring the uninstalled fan to the customer service desk at any Home Depot location.

• What if I do not have my original purchase receipt?

In-store returns without a receipt are eligible for a full refund in the form of a store gift card at the item's established sale price of $179.

• “I don’t feel safe removing the fan. Can you send someone?”

o You do not have to remove the fan yourself. You may hire a licensed electrician or qualified handyman, but the recall does not cover removal, installation, or labor costs.

• “My fan works fine. Can I keep using it?”

o Customers should stop using the recalled fan even if it appears to work normally. To receive a refund, the fan must be properly discarded or returned to a Home Depot store.

• “I don’t want to discard or return the fan.”

o We understand. However, a refund cannot be issued unless you provide the required proof of disposal or return the fan to Home Depot.

• “Why does an online refund take up to 21 days?”

o Online claims require time to review the submitted photos and process the e-gift card or ACH payment. If you need a faster refund, you may take the uninstalled fan to a Home Depot customer service desk.

• “What if I do not have my original purchase receipt?”

o You can take the fan to your local Home Depot store to complete the recall. Returns without a receipt are eligible for a full refund at the item's established sale price of $179

• “For Online Submissions, how do show proof of disposal?”

o After your claim is approved, you will receive instructions for providing proof of disposal. Do not discard your fan until you are instructed to do so.

o Once instructed, and after the fan has been safely uninstalled and disconnected from power, cut the black and white wires from the motor where they connect to the plastic receiver module. You must then provide photos showing the motor and the entire fan placed in the trash, as demonstrated in these example photos.

• “The recall announcement mentioned proof of purchase OR photo of the mounting plate label, why do I need both for the online form?”

o The two items verify different information. Proof of purchase confirms that the fan was purchased from The Home Depot and allows us to refund the amount paid, including applicable sales tax. The mounting plate information confirms that the fan itself is included in the recall.

o For an online refund, you must provide proof of purchase and a picture of the label from the mounting plate that contains the serial number information. If you cannot upload a photo of the mounting plate label, we will request that you provide the serial number and date code by email.

o If you do not have your receipt, we may be able to locate the purchase using the email address associated with the original order. If the purchase cannot be verified, you will need to take the uninstalled fan to a Home Depot store, where you can receive the applicable gift card reimbursement.
